Using computers doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. A good secondhand computer can be had for just a few hundred dollars. We particularly favor Lenovo computers (previously IBM). This article in ArsTechnica illustrates the durability and quality of the famous Thinkpad, now 25 years old.
Software doesn't have to be expensive either. So called Open Source software is free. A very good and in some regards better alternative to MS Office is LibreOffice. It's what we use at KAIZENTU.
Good security software (Anti Virus, or Anti Malware) also doesn't have to cost a penny. Software like AVG, Avast or Comodo have a very good reputation and can protect you and your computer reliably.
You don't even have to use Microsoft Windows as an Operating System. Linux based Elementary OS works just as well, and in some regards even better. It's what we use at KAIZENTU. On Linux, with good browsing habits you don't need Anti Virus/Malware software either. In fact, there aren't many Anti Virus apps for Linux.
Before choosing any Operating System though, you need to think about what you want to do with the computer. Not all applications are available on all platforms. Ie, Adobe Photoshop or FileMaker are only available for Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac, not for Linux based platforms. There are often alternatives (ie The Gimp can be used instead of Photoshop, which, incidently is also available for Windows and Mac), but they usually don't work the same.
